From the President

Jennifer Taylor-Cox

The teacher said to the students, “Come to the edge.”
They said, “We might fall.”
The teacher, again, said, “Come to the edge.”
They replied, “It's too high.”
The teacher persisted, “Come to the edge.”
And they came,
and the teacher pushed them . . .
and they flew.

Adapted from “Come to the Edge,” by Christopher Logue

Coming to the edge means stepping out of your comfort zone. Coming to the edge means testing your knowledge. Coming to the edge means trying something new. Coming to the edge means accepting the challenge. Coming to the edge means applying what you know.

This is what we seek in mathematics education: our classrooms as places where students are invited to fly. With the right amount of direct instruction, careful planning, assessment, encouragement, engagement, reflection, support, and confidence, we can push students to new insights into mathematics. We can also push ourselves. We can step out of our comfort zones to try new strategies. We can accept the challenge. We, too, can fly!

The Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Board of Directors has accepted new challenges, too. I am pleased to share with you that the MCTM Board of Directors engaged in a very productive fall retreat. We devoted a good deal of time to examining NCTM's Curriculum Focal Points. We all gained a better understanding of what they are, why they are important, and how we can encourage mathematics educators to use them. The MCTM Board of Directors is a highly skilled and dedicated group of people. Our retreats and meetings are power-packed with information and decisions that are aimed at helping to foster growth in mathematics education for Marylanders.

The Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics is your organization. We invite you participate in upcoming events. Our 2007 conference will be held on October 19th at Reservoir High School in Howard County. Think about presenting a session or helping the planning committee. Or perhaps you would like to write an article for our flagship publication, the Banneker Banner --- if so, please contact our editor-in-chief, Kira Hamman: hamman@hood.edu. Maybe you would like to participate in Maryland Math Month coming in April. Check our website to see all the ways you can become involved.

Believe in the power of math!

2007 Teacher of the Year Nominations

TIME IS RUNNING OUT - MCTM Teacher of the Year Applications are now being accepted. Visit the MCTM website to download an application. To qualify for this award you must be teaching mathematics during the year you apply, show evidence of professional growth, complete an application, write an essay describing your view of mathematics instruction in today's classroom, and submit two letters of recommendation. A member of the awards committee will observe finalists for each award. The deadline is January 31, 2007! For more information, please see:

NCTM Curriculum Focal Points

Recently, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics published Curriculum Focal Points, a document that describes and promotes the big mathematical ideas for each grade level. The MCTM is currently seeking ways to use the Curriculum Focal Points in its mission to support mathematics educators across the state. If you are interested in learning more about the Curriculum Focal Points you can find relevant links on our website:

Teaching Resources

Check out the following for good information about your mathematics teaching practice. If you have any suggestions for future segments, please email Mike Lueke at hmlueke@aacc.edu.

  • This is an online journal that strives to bring a critical eye to educational policy and generate new ideas. There is a specific link to a separate piece called “Rethinking Mathematics.”
  • http://dir.yahoo.com/Science/Mathematics/: This is part of Yahoo's web directory and is a good start when researching any mathematical topic.
  • http://pbskids.org.cyberchase: This is a companion site to the popular PBS show “Cyberchase.” Activities, games, and classroom lessons abound in this site. Probably best for grades 2 - 6.

MSDE News

Donna Watts

In a pilot program for 2007, the Governor's Academy for Mathematics will be expanded to include middle school mathematics. The current design calls for three middle school academies, each covering two of the middle school mathematics standards. The design will allow teachers to attend the three academies in any order. Teachers will only be allowed to participate in one middle school academy each summer. The application will be available soon at www.marylandpublicschools.org.

Maryland Mathematics Colloquia

If you are aware of local colloquia, symposia, and other activities that would interest our MCTM college level colleagues, please contact Honi Bamberger, MCTM College Level Representative: hbamberger@towson.edu. She would like to share these events with everyone who might be interested. Thanks very much for your help!
