SUMMER 2006 MCTM NEWSLETTERFrom The President
From the PresidentJennifer Taylor-Cox Have you ever heard a song by the Beach Boys called Kokomo? The entire song is about going to one of many relaxing vacation spots. I simply love that song. It is my summer song. Yes, like many of you I work in the summer. But I try to find a few days to just escape to my little "Kokomo". I've learned over the years that Kokomo can be a state of mind --- a place to go to relax and rejuvenate. When I allow myself a little bit of time to escape, I am refreshed; I am renewed; and I am a better mathematics educator! That is what I want for all of you. The testing is finished, the school year completed. Take a few minutes, hours, days, or weeks just to relax. You deserve it!! Maryland Mathematics Month in April was a huge success! The Math Month Committee prepared fabulous calendars for grade level bands. Each calendar included fun and productive math activities for students. The Maryland State Department of Education mailed each school a copy of the calendars. MCTM also mailed all of our members a copy of the calendars. If you participated in Maryland Math Month please fill out a participation form (found at www.marylandmath.org). Because the MCTM Board is always thinking about the future, we've decided to add a new position to the board of directors: a pre-service teacher representative. Here's an introduction from our newest board member: My name is Keith Gallagher. I have been appointed as the pre-service teacher representative on the MCTM Board of Directors. I am a 36-year-old senior at Towson University. For several years, I had been working towards a business degree while working various jobs in the corporate sector. After having two children and watching them develop, though, I became fascinated with the learning process and found that I had a knack for questioning and teaching. As a result, I immediately switched my major to elementary education and enrolled full-time at Towson University. It is now two years later, and I am about to enter my Professional Year where I will be working and learning in the Harford County Public School system. The Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics is your organization. We invite you participate in upcoming events. Our 2006 conference will be held on October 20th at Old Mill High School in Anne Arundel County. Think about presenting a session (contact program chair Christine Oberdorf christineoberdorf@comcast.net) or helping the planning committee (contact conference chair Lynn Clough lclough@aacps.org). Or perhaps you would like to write an article for our journal, the Banneker Banner (contact our editor-in-chief, Kira Hamman hamman@hood.edu). Visit our website to see all the ways you can become involved. Believe in the power of math! MSDE NewsDonna Watts This summer the Office of Mathematics, along with local master teachers, will begin working with over 200 teachers in regional Governor's Academy for Algebra/Data Analysis or Geometry. Teachers will receive training in the teaching and learning of either the Algebra/Data Analysis or the Geometry. For their hard work, teachers will receive a graphing calculator, a stipend, CPD credits, and a collection of various resources. Application for the 2007 Academies will be available in December. Mark your calendar! Also: the Office of Professional Development and the Office of Mathematics are seeking individuals to work on a contractual basis in the area of mathematics. Positions are available at the elementary, middle, or high school level. For more information, please contact Ann Glazer at 410.767.0321 or Donna Watts at 410.767.0355.
