Summer 2005 MCTM NewsletterFrom The President
From the PresidentEdward C. Nolan As we end the school year, consider the wonderful opportunity that summer presents to educators. As you are kicking back and enjoying a less stressful pace, consider what went well in your classroom and what lessons you might improve. Think about how active your students are in the learning process and how may real world examples you are using. I know that I personally review all of my lessons in the summer and consider changes to make. I sometimes have made notes during the lesson that I consider in the summer. One leading mathematics educator stresses that teachers should change ten percent of their teaching every year. So take some time this summer to think about your lessons and your students, but also take time to relax and enjoy the time you have available. For the MCTM this summer, planning continues for the 2005 Fall Conference, Mathematics Without Limits. The conference will be at New Town High School in Owings Mill, Maryland on Friday, October 21st. A mailing will be sent this summer with information for registration for the conference and details regarding schedule and directions. Think about what you would like to focus on at the conference – pick a theme and follow it for the day. Visit the vendors and network with other educators from around the state. And if you have time, join us at the Annual Banquet on Thursday, October 20; information about this event will also be in the summer mailing. If you are interested in presenting at the Fall Conference or want to become more involved in MCTM, please contact me via the MCTM web site (www.marylandmath.org). Thanks, and have a great summer!

NCTM President-Elect Skip Fennell Speaks at Towson UniversityHoni J. Bamberger, MCTM College Level Rep The MCTM along with the Mathematics Education Club from Towson University sponsored a presentation given by Dr. Francis (Skip) Fennell, President-Elect of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) on April 27, 2005. A full Professor from McDaniel College, and the first Marylander to be elected to the Presidency of the NCTM, Skip spoke with educators and pre-service teachers on “Highly Qualified Teachers and Other Stuff.” Mesmerizing an audience of nearly 200 he shared research, his “wonders,” and his worries about the need to prepare mathematics educators in the context of the No Child Left Behind legislation and the rigors of teaching.
