A New Format For the MCTM Newsletter

Beginning this issue, the MCTM will be posting the quarterly newsletter on its website: www.marylandmath.org. This will be the last edition in print. The MCTM Board voted to switch to the electronic format at its December Retreat, due in part to rising publication and mailing costs. The Board also acknowledged the trend toward electronic publication, which is an efficient way to communicate with members and saves paper as well! If you have an email address on file with the MCTM, email notices will announce the posting of each new issue. Please contact Catherine Purnell at catherine.purnell@verizon.net if you wish to confirm or update your email address with us. Of course, you can always print the online version if you prefer to read a hard copy.

From the President

Edward C. Nolan

I hope that all of you are having a productive school year and that the rigors of preparing students for all-important mathematics testing, be it the Maryland School Assessment, the Maryland High School Assessment, Advanced Placement testing, semester exams, or the SATs. Remember, try not to get frustrated with the pressures of testing and student success. The most important lesson for all students at all levels is to become lifelong learners and to be able to solve real world problems using mathematical thinking.

The MCTM is beginning to gear up for the 2005 Annual Conference, Mathematics without Limits, which will be at New Town High School in Owings Mill, Maryland. The conference will be held on October 21, which is the same Friday as the MSTA Conference. I hope that all of you will be able to join us at the Annual Conference, as well as the banquet that will be the night before. If you are interested in presenting at the conference, please complete the proposal form that is available online at www.marylandmath.org. If you are interested in volunteering at the Conference, please contact me via the MCTM website. Continue to check the web site for details about the conference. Final information will be mailed to all MCTM members over the summer.

MSDE News

Donna Watts

The 2005 Governor's Academy for Algebra/Data Analysis and Geometry will be held in ten different locations this summer. There was an overwhelming response to these Academies and applicants will be notified in March if their application was accepted. Participants in the Academies will receive a stipend and CPU credit for their summer work. They will study the content, pedagogy, and technology associated with teaching each of these courses in Maryland.

The Maryland State Department of Education is also monitoring news from Washington, D.C. concerning the No Child Left Behind legislation. The Bush administration is proposing to expand school accountability at the high school level. The current plans call for testing in mathematics and reading in grades 9 through 11.

Presidential Awards

Do you know a great 7-12 math or science teacher? Nominate him or her to receive Presidential Recognition! The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are sponsored by the White House and administered by the National Science Foundation. Every year up to 108 National Awardees receive a special citation signed by the President of the United States, a $10,000 award, and a paid trip for two to Washington, DC to attend a week-long series of recognition events. The program is now accepting nominations for the nation’s highest honor for mathematics and science teachers. Anyone can nominate a grades 7-12 teacher. Teachers should submit completed application materials by May 2, 2005. For more information, including nomination and application forms, please visit www.paemst.org.

NSA Summer Institutes

Stew Saphier

Each year, in conjunction with local counties, the National Security Agency (NSA) sponsors Summer Institutes for Mathematics Teaching (SIMT). These institutes are held in the summer for elementary school (grades 2-5), middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) teachers of mathematics and science. Participants can expect to work hard and have fun in a professional, energetic, fast-paced environment. Participants attend an intensive five-day institute to learn and apply the latest instructional techniques for mathematics classrooms using a wide variety of manipulatives, methods, and technology. Participants will be part of a team that will develop a concept development unit, with a complete assessment section, designed to incorporate the Maryland State Core Learning Goals and the NCTM Standards into a multiple day lesson plan. Participants receive a stipend of $500 and Maryland teachers can also receive three MSDE in-service credits. A continental breakfast and lunch are served each day. Participants are also expected to attend two follow up sessions, one in the fall and one in the spring, where they will make final changes to their concept development units. After completing an institute, you are then eligible to apply for a $2,500 grant to purchase manipulatives or technology for your school. These institutes have received rave reviews from nearly 100% of the participants. For more information and an application to the SIMTs, visit the NSA home page (www.nsa.gov/) and follow the links to 'about NSA,' education and training, and then the Mathematics Education Partnership Program (MEPP). Applications must be postmarked no later than April 8, 2005.
