Fall 2005 MCTM NewsletterFrom The President
From the PresidentEdward C. Nolan Welcome to the 2005-2006 school year! I hope that all of you had a relaxing summer and that you are ready for a dynamic new school year. The Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics is planning another year of great professional development and student learning opportunities. For the fall, we are preparing our Annual Conference, which this year is being held at New Town High School in Owings Mills, Maryland on October 21st. The theme for the conference is Mathematics Without Limits. We have many exciting presenters scheduled to make presentations, including a keynote presentation from the NCTM Executive Director, James Rubillo, as well as sessions by leading educators from across the mid-Atlantic region. The conference also includes a vendor area with sales representatives from many different supply and textbook companies, available to share information and sell products. The full program for the conference will be sent to each pre-registered participant about one week prior to the conference and will be available online in early October. Please see other portions of the newsletter below for more information. In addition, the annual MCTM Banquet will be held the evening before the conference, October 20th, at the Grey Rock Mansion in Pikesville, Maryland. The program for the banquet includes recognizing the newly elected officers of MCTM Board of Directors as well as honoring the MCTM Teacher of the Year Awardees. All information about the conference and the banquet is available online at www.marylandmath.org. The MCTM also supports the Mathalon, a statewide middle school mathematics competition for teams of four students. More information about the Mathalon can be found below and at www.marylandmath.org/events/mathalon.asp. Also please be sure to register for the MCTM Annual Conference and to renew your membership to MCTM. All information for membership and registration, as well as this year’s elections, is in your summer mailing and available online at the web site. If you are interested in what MCTM can do to help you, colleagues, and students, please consider volunteering for MCTM, or just check out our web site, at www.marylandmath.org. On behalf of the MCTM Board of Directors, I wish you a happy and productive 2005-2006 school year!

Outstanding Teacher AwardsMCTM is delighted to announce the winners of the MCTM Outstanding Teacher Awards for 2004-2005. We are proud to congratulate these educators for demonstrating quality in mathematics instruction in Maryland! Jason de Freitas
MSDE NewsDonna Watts At the August meeting of the State Board of Education, Dr. Grasmick proposed shifting the accountability measure in mathematics for high schools from the geometry test to the algebra/data analysis test. The Board supported this change. This means that students will no longer be required to take the geometry assessment at the end of their course. However, students are still required to earn a geometry credit that is aligned to the state core learning goals. Beginning with the school year 2005-06, Maryland will use the results of the algebra/data analysis test as the mathematics measure for adequate yearly progress in high schools to comply with the No Child Left Behind legislation. For the Maryland School Assessment in grades 3 – 8, the department has proposed that Harcourt be the vendor for this assessment for the next 5 years. The responsibilities of the current vendor, CTB-McGraw Hill, would end after the administration and data reporting for the 2006 test. For more information on either of these topics, go to www.marylandpublicschools.org.
NCTM Regional Conference in CTThe NCTM Regional Conference focused on Assessment will take place in Hartford, CT October 6 – 8, 2005 at the Connecticut Convention Center at Adriaen’s Landing. The Keynote Speaker will be Timothy Kanold, who will speak on Motivating Students’ Improved Performance through Authentic Assessments. Also featured will be over 100 workshops, 13 mini-courses, and almost 200 sessions. Other speakers include Rose Mary Irons, Doug Clements, Sandy Atkins, Carole Greenes, Don Balka, Gail Burrill, Jerry Cumming, Bettye Forte, MCTM’s own Skip Fennell, and Cathy Seeley, NCTM President.
2005 MathalonThis year's MATHALON will be held on October 29, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Meade Middle School. The event is open to all middles schools in the state of Maryland. The mathematics event consists of three rounds of competition, each scored independently. The individual test and the team test are written examinations taken by individuals and a school team of four students respectively. In the invention round, teams of four students—each from different schools—choose one of five "inventions" to design and build. Then, without help from any adult coach, the team is given 20 minutes to completely build their invention using only the materials provided. The rules for judging this part of the competition are explained in advance. The entry fee is used to defray the costs of holding the event and is only $30 per school team. For details and registration information visit www.marylandmath.org/events/mathalon.asp.
